Radix Dei VII
By Hanlu Zhang, Grade 11
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
This art piece is titled “Radix Dei VII,” or in other words, “Root of God VII.” It proposes a sharp impression through the blunt attitude of charcoal and carries the burden of the perilous black shades. This piece is no longer a lifeless depiction of man made matters, but a representation of spirit present in an unprecedented or indign place. The root of God may grow from an arduous spawn, but will undoubtedly overtake and conquer the dark around it, giving the soulless life and making its way up to glory.
Radix Dei VII has a goal to display the power of God’s nature. Compared to what humans have accomplished over generations, God’s original work may seem to be increasingly underwhelming as time goes on. However, it should always be acknowledged that all modern designs mimic His natural creation. Even if artificial materials seem to keep growing and developing, it can never surpass the perfect functions of nature. In the illustration, the tree at the bottom of the ruined cathedral strives even without the support of direct light or soil. Its roots grasp at the building walls and climbs to the top in dominance. God’s inventions are perfect, hence the number “VII” which signifies perfection.
The art process of this work came with its own challenges, fitting to its theme, as it proposed a difficult perspective, complicated details, and heavy meaning. However, the imperfections in the process were more than welcome as a representation of man’s infinite but impossible craving to reach God’s level of flawlessness.
