Peony Serenity
By Cameryn Hui, Grade 10
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
My art piece depicts blooming peonies and soft, gentle bees. Peonies are very beautiful with their many layer of petals; I wanted to capture their elegance in my art piece. I utilized the layering properties of watercolour to emphasize the depths of the petals. I also used contrasting colours in the yellow of the bees and the purple shadows of the peony.
Through this art piece, I aim to stir a deep sense of peace and tranquility, inviting viewers to pause and immerse themselves in nature's beauty. The blooming peonies symbolize the forthcoming of spring, their layers unfolding with each passing day. The bees further highlight the theme of transition into spring as they aid the peony in its growth.
I enjoyed experimenting with different watercolour techniques to get the desired effects. I discovered new ways of using watercolour to express my art in more creative ways. It was a lot of time-consuming work—layering all these techniques, but the result was worth it in the end.
