On Instinct
By Alfred Chu, Grade 11
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
Fishing is about patience and strategy, but for the fish it relies all on instinct. This piece is trying to depict the instinct of the fish reacting to the bait and fishing itself. Just like in real fishing, the fish relies on its instinct, unaware of what is ahead. Who knows who will win till the last second? It may be the fish that gets away with the bait, or it’s the fisherman that catches the fish.
I always go fishing, and when a fish bites the bait, it's the most remarkable moment. That moment of great tension is what inspired me to create this piece. I wanted to capture the instance when a fish sees the bait. I combined different reference images to create this piece, some for the fish's visual realism and others for its location and movement. I believe these visuals capture the critical moment in fishing.
The process: the most enjoyable part of this painting is the background, the grass, the water, and the wood. As the background required less in form, I got to do whatever I wanted. I scribbled, scrubbed, and made lines all according to my instinct. This creates more contrast in form between the tightly drawn fish and the loosely drawn background.
