Happy Feet of Paper Penguins
By Rohan Gaddi, Grade 10
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
The main theme of my art is the relationship between the parent and child. Though they are in a still position, the child is still assuming the same stature as it's parent. I'd like to imagine the many subtle techniques I used to elevate my art piece reflect the many things parents do for their children.
I chose a penguin as a subject because of the weather at the time. I liked the idea of creating a penguin with ripped up paper because of the textures I could create with colour and the physical paper. I chose to create a parent and a child because of the bond they have.
The process: the thing I enjoyed most were the gradients I had to make in places like the penguin's neck. I spent a majority of my time on this piece trying to make them as smooth as possible because I wanted the colours in the piece to be as authentic as possible. I also enjoyed doing different things with the paper, altering size and texture with it.
