Figs of God
By Augustus Lo, Arsany Armanios, Cyrus Li, Mark Maurice, Luke Zhang, Grade 10
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
The “Figs of God” was inspired by the symbolism of figs in Christianity, where they represent wisdom, abundance and divinity with God. The detail of the seeds and beauty of the fruit, inspired us to paint this piece .I wanted to highlight how this fig ties God and Humans through fruit and how nature connects us to His divinity, inviting us to eat the fruit.
The reason we chose this name is that it evokes a blend of divine and earthly symbolism. Figs were God’s first fruit he created, and we strived to show that through our art piece. Figs are seen as a sacred fruit, representing fertility, peace, wisdom, divinity and abundance.
The process: I enjoyed painting the detail of the figs and the branches holding them in the tree. I found it very fun to paint the texture and vibrant inner colours of the fig, while also enjoying painting the landscape and mountains in the background. I found it entertaining gluing leaves, and painting shadows and edges of the leaves. Overall it was fun to experiment with different colour mixtures in the figs to create this painting.
