About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement

Many people may be afraid when they look down at the dark unknowns beneath the ocean’s surface, but beyond that point, there is still life that lives deep down and thrives as beautiful creatures. This beauty is what makes the concept of an ocean much more lively and wonderful.

When I think of the ocean, I always liked to fantasize that the view beneath the waves would be majestic instead of eerie. If I were a character in a fictional story, I would love to stand under the ocean to find remnants of ruins accompanied by a beautiful scenery of flourishing life. With this image in my head, I also wanted to tie in an aspect of the ocean’s massive size.

I would personally center my piece around the word “majesty.” I want to show the power and beauty of the ocean, whether through the colours, composition, or impression. This is because I believe vast spaces give much room for imagination.

The process: This art piece challenged me to carry a “free” mindset as I painted. I enjoyed applying different textures with a variety of tools to form a diverse palette throughout the painting. It was a memorable experience to combine both free texturing as well as delicate details within a large canvas.
