A Bee's Pink Haven
By Yolande Ma, Grade 10
About This Art Piece: The Artist’s Statement
I chose this name because I thought it encapsulated a bee finding refuge within a pink carnation really well.
The thing that inspired me to create this art piece was the opportunity to express the beauty of nature, and how flowers, living creatures, and changing seasons shape the natural world. I wanted to capture a moment that displays nature's harmony through the interaction of a honey bee flying around a carnation, preparing to pollinate it. The art piece was also inspired by wanting to explore different watercolour techniques and learning new ways to blend colours seamlessly into each other.
The theme that I would like to communicate through this art piece was the whimsical feeling of springtime and the carefree nature of a bee flying around a pink carnation in bloom. I wanted the flower to represent the beauty of nature and how all of nature is ultimately God's creation. I wanted the bee to symbolize freedom and the intricate designs of God's work.
The things I enjoyed most about making this art piece was watching it all come together the more I worked on it, as well as learning different ways to make the watercolour blend and layer together, making the colours pop. I enjoyed the process of creating the carnation petal by petal, as well as painting the bee. Finally, the best thing about creating this painting was making the finishing details that finally completed the artwork.
